WE’VE TRAVELED TO NEW ORLEANS a half dozen times in the last five years, and only the French Quarter tourists get old. Everything else is a revelation, a history lesson, a city desperately hanging onto heritage in spite of hurricanes, pandemic, and development.

I was recently there working on my new book, and my daughter Kathleen was there for fun. So we did what anyone would do when they are visiting America’s most legendary culinary destination—our homework.

Or at least, Kathleen did her homework. I went back to my favorite haunts. And we decided to compile this list of 15 just in case you are heading to Nola any time soon. It hits the highlights, speaks to what’s happening now, and suggests some fresh flavors.
