Loved the beautiful color photo of Eisenhower's boyhood home. I visited his home in Gettysburg, PA--the only one he and Mamie ever owned. Also fun to read about Nixon's fondness for mashed potatoes and his special technique. So many good stories-- King George enjoying American hot dogs, etc.

As always, Anne, thank you sincerely for all that you write. Mary Todd Lincoln's cake has long been a staple in my recipe box, and I was starting to gather vegetables for soup about an hour ago, so now I have a new recipe to try. I plan to use a giant can of Rotel tomatoes.

Today, however, soup and cake are hard to finish because my heart is extremely heavy with sorrow for children and parents lost to gun violence. I look at my own happy grandchildren and wonder not what they will be , but whether they will grow up. Unimaginable. It's even difficult to muster the energy to work in my garden, one of my favorite things. Please continue writing about it and reminding us to be strong and to continue efforts to change this frightening trend.

Extraordinary article. Thank you. And thank you for the continued support of Covenant. I know it doesn't, but I keeping hoping that if we share, we can somehow help ease the unbearable weight of grief carried by the mothers and families of Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9; Mike Hill, 61; William Kinney, 9; Katherine Koonce, 60; Cynthia Peak, 61; and Hallie Scruggs, 9.

Anne, thanks for this riveting piece. I enjoyed every morsel and now obviously must order Prud’homme’s book! The Eisenhower two-day vegetable soup is quite a hoot--I just love the part about giving the unused soup meat to your dogs or the neighbor’s chickens--reminders of a more rural America. The almond cake looks like a winner too and just the thing for Mother’s Day!

Thanks also for reminding us that amid our happy celebrations, we must continue to fight against the exploding gun violence that is threatening everything this country stands for.

We can't forget. 200+ gun violence incidents, and the year isn't half over. Our allies are telling their citizens it's not safe to travel here.

This cake sounds delicious. I have a small booklet of First Ladies' dishes, but nothing by presidents, and his book sounds intriguing.

Happy Mother's Day!

Thank you, Anne. Our hearts are breaking here in Texas for the senseless killings at our Allen Outlet Mall, just as they are at all of the other mass killings in the past. I’m praying for the families and friends of all the victims.

Always a wonderful email to open aside from those with theological instruction this is my favorite one! I have enjoyed looking over some of the antique cookbooks of the White House, no doubt you are very familiar with those! I love how you weave great history, images, recipes and your own insights and glimpses into your heart, clearly it is a gentle and caring one, this I know personally and thank God for you. Your support with the now tattered red and black bow is no doubt an encouragement to those who drive by and see it, surely most appreciated. We in our fellowship have heard what most listening only to the mainstream media will not through a pastor of a church in TX very closely affiliated with our own church network. I also listened to Allie Beth Stuckey's Relatable podcast as she lives in TX and has always shed a biblical light on what transpired there as it did in Nashville. She understands policy due to her own education and is actively engaging in the conversation, and we should have that conversation but through the biblical Christian lens which is rooted and anchored in Scripture (vs. cultural Christian) so it pushes back on the media narrative which does not align with God's Word. Allie did also note the way that law enforcement once more stopped the carnage as in Nashville, we thank God for our brave men and women going into the line of fire amid so much often unfair criticism. We have always had guns in our nation, my husband is old enough to recall those pickup trucks with gun racks parked at the high school where they had shooting sports and teams, at times through 4-H but what has shifted is within people and their lack of morality, their depravity and despair as enemies of God. As people of God, we will always stand on His firm foundation of Truth rather than what the talking heads tell us. When all else is shifting and crumbling, we will not be shaken as such, why we react differently as many saw in Nashville, despite the heartache and sorrow, we do not lose our hope and joy which do not depend upon external circumstances. What people need most desperately is the gospel message, Christ alone can make the sinner's heart one that is both at peace with God and filled with the peace of Christ that indwells every regenerate believer. This enables them to live in society no longer as part of the problem but as the solution, as Paul the persecutor and killer of Christians had his heart's desire changed to do the will of God, no longer his own. I am a redeemed child of God and therefore cannot proclaim any other solution for all that ails our hurting world filled with troubles than to repent and believe in Christ alone for salvation. God assures us that we will see increasing levels of lawlessness as our days progress and increase in darkness. No anti-gun agenda will ever match the matchless power of King Jesus to reconcile sinful mankind to Him and each other, and I will not oppose God's Word but as His messenger of peace, proclaim the gospel as our only true and permanent solution. Just as cooking and meals can unite, political agendas will divide (it is sad when we see food-based businesses such as major corporations or a certain spice company focus on politics and as such join in the cancel culture mentality rather than just stick to the main thing, the food) and this is the hallmark of Satan, to divide, to lead to less, steal, kill and destroy. Food and cooking are God's good gifts to us all as His creation and His provision, His common grace to mankind so His enemy will use even that to stir the pot, pun intended! Every one of us will stand before Jesus not as Savior but as judge, sorted through only one of two gates, for sheep or goats, I fear God, not man. Gal. 1:10 May the Lord add blessing to the reading of His Word that people might turn to Him, be saved and transformed. Grace and peace to you, Anne! Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

This is so interesting, Anne! I love how Jackie forever put her mark on things. Such a great post and so much history, loved it. And thanks for keeping gun control legislation top-of-mind after another horrific slaughter this week in Texas.
