What an inspired choice on your husband's part! And a husband who cooks for you, marvelous!

Custard...perfectly simple and hasn't changed through the decades. Love your post, thank you

PS. Is there nowhere else that bloggers, newsletter writers can go? I am aware that this is a problem with social media and often a site starts out one way and then morphs.

I think it is time for you to leave Substack behind. It has garnered a reputation as a platform for Nazis, White Supremacists, etc. and you are better than that.

My Dad made delicious coconut custard... same way another good recipe is rice pudding with raisins.

Tom Lake was a very good and satisfying book to read - I like everything Ann Patchett writes. I'm just finishing Barbara Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead. It's an amazing book. I'm sure that Meryl Streep does an amazing job reading Tom Lake, but I just can't listen to someone read a book to me. I need to see the words myself. I must be a visual learner. It would be nice to be able to listen to one sometimes, but I just don't find it to be enjoyable.

Mmmmmmmm. Custard. Warm with fresh raspberries is my favorite from childhood. Your husband sounds like a gentle gem. What a great post.

What a sweet husband.

I have a gazillion cookbooks, but I don't have that one.

Don’t even think it. The version I have may be from 1946 with a preface to the 1943 edition with a poignant penultimate paragraph

Absolutely! It has everything . I haven’t used it much lately but will see what other gems I can find

I’ve just made the recipe and halved it using 1 large egg. Perfect and comforting while I watch the nasty weather outside! Glad you’re feeling better

Yes to everything…! ESPecially about listening to “Tom Lake” vs reading it. Sorry Ann P but THIS story should be heard. Maybe because it is essentially tied to a play (2 plays?? - “The Cherry Orchard”??) What I need to know is… what is your camellia cultivar? The color is heaven! Well done you!

I was thrilled to see the recipe you printed as I have a copy of that book from the 40’s given to me by my American mother-in-law. So I turned to p. 628 and there it was! Did your husband use large eggs? Irma doesn’t mention the size!

Happy to hear you are feeling better and got a little TLC from your hubby! We had devilled eggs with our Christmas evening meal! Is baked custard as good as Creme Brulee? I need to know! :-)
