Congratulations on the King Cake, Anne! I just looked at Book Riot 👏👏👏Today is Packzi Day in Chicago, deep-fried cream or fruit-filled doughnuts dusted with powdered sugar. Tomorrow, penance 😂
I'll be testing for dessert tonight a English pancake recipe from the 18th century that includes orange blossom water and double cream in the original recipe!
I have a long tradition of somehow (how?!!) forgetting Shrove Tuesday, as Brits call Mardi Gras. If I remember, I make British pancakes, sort of a flabby crepe, not unlike Swedish pancakes in texture, served only with a squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkle of sugar (also the traditional toppings) Or else it's a day of regret that I didn't make a King Cake. Again. 😂 Thank you for the red beans and rice recipe. I may give it a go in my Instant Pot. 😀
You’re right about Mondays and red beans in New Orleans! We had them in school and hospitals also served them. I soak mine all night, too. After I rinse them I do a little departure and use low sodium chicken broth. I put them in the crockpot with smoked hocks and veggies. I also add Worcestershire sauce and andouille towards the end.. no need to add salt! I’m glad you liked my king cake picture. No surprise at all that yours won the bake-off!
We loved your white bean soup I made last week. The frizzled shallots and prosciutto made it over the top! Can’t wait to try this as I don’t have a recipe for red beans and rice. My Dad lived in New Orleans for a while so this was in rotation at my house. Houston had a few restaurants that were known for their red beans and rice. I’m wondering if they’re still around? Love me a good King cake, too. No plans here, tho. Thanks!

Looks delicious! I want to make for the kids this weekend!
That mashing technique sounds perfect.
Congratulations! I love Book Riot. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
We had fastnachts. Deep fried yeast doughnuts with mashed potatoes mixed with the flour--no filling.
Red Beans and Rice is a Monday tradition over all of Louisiana, and it now has its own state holiday--10/24. https://z1059.com/its-official-red-beans-and-rice-day-is-october-24/
What a fabulous selection of NOLA food you’ve given us! And congratulations on winning the bake-off.
Great! Thanks for the hometown tip, Anne. I’ll check it out.
