I pop my own in a brown paper bag, sans oil, in the microwave. It comes out fluffy, white and dry. I think I got the recipe off the bag of Bob's Red Mill but I might've found it on the internet. I don't remember. I don't add anything to it. I like butter and toppings, but too much. So I count my blessings and just enjoy the popped corn. That said, my daughter adds nutritional yeast and swears by it and now that I read it has Anne Byrn's blessing as well...well...
When I was a child, my grandparents had a long handled thing made of metal mesh, with a sliding top. We put the popcorn in it and shook it while it popped in their fireplace! Such fun for a kid.
I always pop our own- usually in a microwave popcorn maker, olive or avocado oil.. a dash of salt. That’s it!
This winter in Saint Paul MN there was a Christmas market. There they sold kettle corn lightly sweetened but with a twist!!! A dash of ancho chili powder and black pepper! Omg was that good. Considered MN spicy but perfect . So try adding these in lieu of or in addition to salt. Note adding even 2 tbsp of brown sugar to the cooking oil gives it just enough glaze to hold the pepper and salt.
I pop my own and love orvle reddenbacher’s. Sprinkle with garlic salt and or Parmesan for a different flavor or just salt and butter. My comfort snack anytime.
I make my own popcorn. Microwave popcorn is horrible; in fact my dog won't even eat microwave popcorn). I use refined coconut oil (no coconut taste) and store brand "white" popcorn (not yellow). I use exactly 28 grams of coconut oil to 105 grams of white popcorn. To the oil, (in a 3 qt sauce pan/pot) I add 3 kernels and bring to 350 degrees of med-medium high heat (when the kernels pop, the oil is 350 degrees). I add the rest of the kernels swirl the pan til all covered in oil, add a lid, and remove from heat for 30 seconds to allow all the kernels to heat evenly. After 30 seconds, I return the pan to the heat and usually just before the one minute mark, the popcorn begins to pop. Every 15 seconds, I swirl the kernels around (move the pan back and forth) and let it sit. Repeat til done, total time a little over 2, 2.5 minutes. The popcorn comes out perfect!! I add melted butter and actual popcorn salt. It truly is the best. Ask my friends and my bowling buddies. I took a double batch to bowling and now everyone expects it a least once a month!
Kind of serendipitous to read your post a day after popping a GINORMOUS soup pot filled to the brim with popcorn for just my husband and me as we watched the new film, “The Glass Onion.” This batch was from a 28-ounce bag of Trader Joe’s organic popping corn. ($2.99). I just guesstimated the amount of corn and oil and had no idea it’d make so much! I thought the pot was going to overflow! Thanks so very much for your recipe and your suggestion of oils. I used grape seed, which I thought was high heat, but I will definitely try avocado oil in the future. That soup sounds like a kick too! Thanks for a great post!
It's the best-tasting popcorn for the price. I can usually get it 2 for $6, sometimes 2 for $5. I can only buy it at regional grocery stores, but it is available on Amazon if you want to try it--much more expensive there.
Mostly I pop corn in a Whirley Pop so old it was made in the USA; favorite brands for this are Austin Mills and Trader Joe's Organic Popping Corn. I use a mixture of grapeseed and olive oil; despite its reputation I've never had a problem with olive oil smoking or burning and it has a great flavor.
Microwave is more complicated, different microwave wattages and since many companies have shrunk the bag size recently. My favorite microwave brand is Jolly Time's Simply Popped, which isn't as good as home popped
Great post!! I always thought PopSecret Homestyle was most like the homemade popcorn I had growing up..but so unhealthy. Now I favor organic corn popped in avocado or coconut oil. Trader Joe’s has one that is airpopped then lightly sprayed with olive oil and salt which is pretty good too.
Popping my own, I am not disappointed. A few extra minutes, a watchful eye, and moving the pan over the flame while it cooks, is a small price to pay for pure unadulterated popcorn. The popcorn with additives is a total bust for me. And in the theaters, they serve horrible popcorn. The chemicals used are such a turn off, I once moved seats to get away from people that had purchased a whole bowl of the stuff...nose abuse occurred!!
Growing up in the 70s my dad would bring home TV Time popcorn since it had a packet of butter and salt with it, and mom would pop it on the stove, and then we'd watch a movie. Now, years later I have found the best microwave popcorn popper, I got it from Aldi a few years ago it's a round container with a pop top on the lid to vent. It takes 3 minutes to pop and all the kernels pop and there are no burnt kernels. I am very happy with this, and now that I have to watch my sodium I found some seasonings that are low in sodium to put on it. My husband even eats popcorn again.☺️ I'm using jolly time

I pop my own curtest of Orville in his oil, or if I'm feeling indulgent, i use black truffle oil. but then I pour hot butter over both

Just tried hot Hungarian Paprika... tastes just like the popcorn from the fair!!!

What is nutritional yeast please?
Avocado oil! Now there’s something I’d never thought of. Thanks for the moments of joy in this issue!

Our town's general store had been selling 25 cent bags of freshly popped corn for decades but during Covid they had to shut that down. It was sorely missed by many. In June of 2022 they brought it back at the same price, too. https://www.peninsuladailynews.com/news/swains-popcorn-to-return-this-wednesday/
My fav, too, is popped with nutritional yeast, plus tamari.
If I make it from scratch, I make it in a stainless steel pot on the stove, venting every so often, and then I add melted butter and salt.
If I buy a bag of popped, I buy a regional brand by Martin's called SlenderPop. martinssnacks.com/product/martins-slender-pop-sea-salted-popcorn/
