Ann, Thank your for this post. Your posts are always thoughtful and interesting. I enjoyed so much your reminisces about President Carter; thank you for sharing. He was one of a kind and will be missed for his goodness and love for humanity.

Deborah, you are so welcome. Jimmy Carter was an all-around good person, to people he knew and didn’t, to old and young, to sick and healthy, to the earth. What an amazing example he can be of hard work, intellect, an open mind, and compassion. I am hopeful his legacy will guide us in 2025.

Kudos on such a significant book and book launch, Anne. The marble cake I made (for the second time!) from a recipe in the book was a big hit at our Sunday night Hanukkah feast. My husband said it was the best thing on the menu.

Another shoutout for the excellent piece you wrote about Jimmy Carter for The Bitter Southerner. He and Rosalynn were examples for the rest of us of how to live a meaningful, generous, happy life through service and faith. Their respect and love for their Southern heritage was clearly reflected in their food choices. I wonder, did you ever publish a recipe for the Lane Cake?

Oops! Obviously I should have checked your latest cookbook for the recipe for the Lane Cake! I’m still working my way through it with slow relish. I know it will be a staple of my cookbook collection for years to come.

I drizzled the chocolate glaze over the marble cake, but layering it is a great idea too. It’s quite a lovely cake with all that marbling!

Aha! Unfortunately I seem only to find commercial low-fat buttermilk in these parts—never the whole variety you suggest. I shall have to keep looking.

You can substitute full fat Greek yogurt. Thin with a little whole milk.

Thank you, Ruth! Glad the marble cake is a hit. We love it also baked in layers and frosted. Yes, I did publish a recipe for Lane Cake in the new book. It is called the Emma Rylander Lane Prize Cake after the woman who created it. The recipe is also in my book, American Cake. Excellent cake. Super boozy. Watch out!

Happy and Healthy New Year, Anne! I enjoy your Substack letter very much! This one was extra heartfelt, with your reminiscences about President Carter--a man I admired--and your wishes for the new year!

I also love your "Baking in the American South." It is a wonderful treasure of heritage recipes.I have many pages bookmarked for future baking. I have tried many of the cornbread recipes, and I am looking forward to the next Colorado Palisade peach season to try the peach recipes in the cookbook.

Hoppin’ John has been our New Years dish ever since a friend introduced me to it many years ago when I lived in Detroit. I always feel a bit guilty that I forego the Italian version (lentils and sausage). My go-to recipe has always been Craig Claiborne’s. Thanks for this version, and for the backstory. Fascinating! Ann! Your article on Jimmy Carter and his family brought such joy to me just now. He was president when I was born in 1980 but I certainly don’t remember that year much. I’ve heard good things about the Carter’s, but now I feel like I actually know something about them. There is something about the knowledge of what people love to eat and cook in their own homes that is so personal. Food connects us in so many ways and your story sharing of our once U.S. leader and leaders from afar fascinate my mind. Thank you! Have a blessed New Year!

Jamie, thank you for taking the time to read what I wrote. It was an honor to think back on those days when I was so new to my job and thrust into a situation at the White House. It stayed with me. I’ve always gravitated towards Jimmy Carter’s honesty and not forgetting where he came from. Plains is definitely a place to visit.

Today I close the door on a 44 year career as a nurse. I chose today so I can have a new beginning tomorrow and hopefully be cured of cancer and enjoy overall better health. I will make more recipes out of your book and enjoy your articles!
