I made your (Kathleen’s) sugar cookies yesterday and they ARE the best! Truly. I sprinkled some of the small hearts I made and today tried making royal icing with meringue powder as I thought it would be safer than egg whites as I’m not giving them out right away. It was ok but thinner than I expected even after adding more icing sugar and meringue powder. I think I need a better recipe. Do you have one? I could as Chef Google, but I like to ask those I trust! I’m going to make your Crisp Gingerbread Stars next
Love your nostalgic family baking stories, Anne. They evoke the best memories from my childhood. As a very young baker in the 60’s, I received a Valentine’s Day card from my grandmother who lived in Massachusetts. The back of the card included a printed recipe for sugar cookies. I remember baking and decorating batches of hearts to send to my grandmother every Valentine’s Day. The recipe became our favorite sugar cookie recipe, and when I became a mom, I baked them with my young girls. Decades later, the recipe is still used in my kitchen, as well as in my daughters’ kitchens. Years ago, I began replacing a bit of the butter with shortening to give the cookies a bit more structure. I will now try your method of placing the baking sheet in the refrigerator before it goes in the oven. Thanks for the tip! Happy Holidays!
The stories behind the food... twice the joy. Sugar cookies on my list for this weekend.
Now THAT’S a plate of Cookies! ✨ great read, Anne ✨

Instead of sprinkling sugar on these cookies, can I bake them plain and ice them with Royal icing afterwards?
