It was horrible to see the devastation in Maui on the news. I pray for all of the families experiencing so much loss. We were in Maui just last June. Paradise lost for sure. Thank you for this, Anne! We can be the HELPERS!

I wish I could be more help. Is our future to be filled with these weather related disasters? At least it brings humility and compassion.

As usual, the tragedy in Lahaina is hitting those with the least resources--locals who live and work there and cater to the tourists who come and go. Thanks for your heartfelt post, Anne, with suggestions on how to help and a great salad idea with roots in the Hawaiian culture. I admire your ability to meld heart and hearth so seamlessly.

I write from afar. But you are so right how those with the least are most affected by these tragedies, Ruth. It pains me. ❤️

Can't wait to make it! Also - another great place to donate and help the folks on Maui is Episcopal Relief & Development Fund. They've set up the Hawaiʻi Emergency Response Fund: https://www.episcopalrelief.org/press-resources/supporting-the-diocese-of-hawaii-after-wildfires/

The was a feature on the macaroni salad about a year ago in our paper, I think. There's a Hawai'ian restaurant near me which I keep meaning to go to.

I donated to World Central Kitchen through an author-sponsored fundraiser.

Curious how things connect and interconnect. Reading through the comments on Substack's "political activism" announcement, I found Anne and her Substack. I'm an incorrigible foodie myself... originally from the Czech Republic, where the dumplings and pastries come descended from heaven itself and the sauces are too good to keep to yourself. Especially looking forward to reading all your chocolate-themed posts Anne (psst, I'm a chocolate judge in my spare time! ❤️🍫 )

Living and having grown up in the Midwest there is somthing so comforting about macaroni salad as well as potato, egg, tuna and chicken salads. The macaroni salads that I am familiar with always had peas in it. I'll have to try your recipe! Thanks also for the heads up about organizations we can support. There is a documentary about World Central Kitchen on Disney+ (and probably other streaming services) called We Feed People. It's very worthwhile to watch if you haven't seen it yet.

Truly Hawaiian - fry some Spam, then cube it and add it to the salad!
